PTFC Under-17 Boys Fall in Regional Semifinals The Piedmont Triad Football Club (PTFC) Black under-17 boys soccer team fell short in their quest to make it to the prestigious President’s Cup National finals, losing 3-1 to Lafayette Futbol Club (LFC) Storm of Louisiana in the Region III semifinals, held Sunday in Greer, South Carolina. The team had advanced to the regionals as an alternate by finishing second in the North Carolina President’s Cup, held last month in Greensboro. On Friday, PTFC dropped their first match of the tournament to Houston (TX) Express Navy, 2-0. Saturday, the team rebounded with a 2-1 victory over the Murfreesboro (TN) Soccer Club Strikers. David Mathabane and Michael Fishel scored goals to key the win. In Saturday’s second match, PTFC triumphed 1-0 on a lone goal by David Mathabane. In Sunday’s semifinal, LFC denied several excellent first half scoring opportunities by PTFC and scored a goal late in the half to take a 1-0 halftime lead. They scored early in the second half to widen the margin to two. Late surges by PTFC lead to a goal by Josh Pendleton on an assist by Michael Fishel. PTFC kept pressure on LFC in the final minutes but did not manage to draw even. LFC then scored once more in the final two minutes of the match. Goalkeeper Chance Bonham recorded 5 saves and defender Tyler Stanfield had 7 stops to key the defense. Josh Berry and Drew Gibson lead the effort in the midfield. PTFC finished the year with a 16-5-0 record. They are coached by Daniel Walsh and Josh Windley.
