"Bateson joins Maullin staff as the top assistant after serving the past 10 years as the head coach at Guilford College. He brings 16 years of head coaching experience to the staff. Under his guidance, the Quakers earned 19 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) commendations, including a pair of All-Region selections.

Bateson spent two seasons as the head coach at Tri-State University (now Trine University). He returned to his alma mater as the head soccer coach from 2000-04, coaching a pair of All-Region selections and 11 All-Conference honorees. Bateson played collegiately at Alma College and then professionally with the Mid-Michigan Bucks and the Colorado Comets.

“Joining the UNCG soccer program is very exciting,” Bateson said. “To be able to be a part of a program with such a rich soccer history and tradition is nothing short of a blessing. I would like to thank Justin for the opportunity to join him and coach in his program. We've known each other for 10 years, so I'm sure the transition into his program will be fairly seamless. Secondly, I cannot thanks Kim Record and Jody Smith enough for the chance to be a coach in the UNCG family. Kim Record runs a great department and I'm excited to be a part of it.”
